Found It!

For quite some time now, I've been asking Jobster for a widget that would let me display job postings on my website and blog that might be of interest to all three people who visit. It seems my friend Nathan at nPost has beat them to it, creating a widget that displays jobs at startups.

To see it in action, check out the sidebar over on the right. I like it, this is exactly what I was looking for - a way to connect geeks with jobs that might interest them and help entrepreneurs find great talent.

Hopefully it will help you find what you're looking for. Of course, if you don't know yet what that is - or you think you might need help succeeding in your new role - I'm certainly available to work with you to sort that out too!

In researching yet more issues with my appliances, I ran across an absolute gem today called Shift Happens.




When I'm not battling appliances and unintentionally crusading for better customer service, this is the world that I live in and why I work with the people that I do. Thanks to the folks at Bring Good Things to Life for both the heads up on the video and also for information and moral support in dealing with the company that brought us flaming dishwashers and exploding oven doors.

Here's a tip - even if you've got good service most of the time, stuff still has to work and people have to feel fairly treated.

Hey, Don't I Know You?

Sometimes worlds collide - and I very nearly always find it an odd experience when it happens, even when it's partly expected. Catching up on an industry blog or two today, I was reminded rather abruptly that Dean Hachamovitch, whom I mostly know as Dean & Joan, is also Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager of Internet Explorer. Oh, yeah, that Dean. Weird.

As to the whole IE 8 issue - Joel is right, there's no good answer, let alone an easy one. I will say one thing however - that is, from my experience and a complete Microsoft outsider who uses Firefox more often than IE right now, Dean is one of those scary smart guys you find every now and then. And I don't say that lightly; I'm not someone who is that easily intimidated in the smarts department.

So - forget popularity. Someone's bound to be ticked off by the time this thing is set loose - a whole bunch of someones, actually. Fortunately, I anticipate Dean can handle it. When he signs off on a decision that he thinks is best, though, I'm sure that at least there will be some logic behind it. Would that logic could be enough in this situation.

Now that House Bill 2674 has been delivered to Governor Gregoire today, it feels a lot easier to think about spending more time on other projects. First on my list is updating my materials explaining the GRIP model of goal management in greater detail because so many people have been looking for more information on that as a smarter alternative to SMART goals.

If you've ever felt so consumed by a thing that you're just glad to be getting it behind you so that you can pay attention to something else for a while, you'll understand my relief at moving on.

Having spent the past 14 months working on this bill so that it really does apply just to counselors and not also to coaches or other kinds of services outside the bounds of mental health care, I am glad to see this process reaching a successful conclusion. That was a lot of letters, phone conversations, and hours of listening to public testimony and committee executive action! For one of the predecessor bills last session, I even delivered my own public testimony on behalf of coaches.

Now I can get back to Goals, Requirements, Issues and Plans as well as other topics of interest to geeks and geeky pursuits of interest to me. If there is something in particular that interests you or you think might interest me, feel free to comment!

Making Tracks Like Billy

Now I have proof that I'm a drill sergeant of a parent. My best guess at the distance for our little hike around Redondo Beach and environs was about 6 miles before I found MapMyRun.

Apparently I was a "little" off on the low side even before we met up with Tall Person at the swingset and continued back toward the Hermosa Beach pier (view in satellite or hybrid mode zoomed in a bit to see) before finally heading back to the hotel to get ready for dinner.


No wonder Small Person and I were a bit worn out, though I have to say, he is growing up to be a real trooper and truly hardly complained at all. Although we saw lots of interesting boats with lots of interesting names, his favorite part was seeing the seals out in the middle of the harbor. Through all of our meanderings around the marina, though, we never got quite as close as we would have liked. Thankfully, dinner at Huntington Beach involved a lot less walking.

Oh - and the next day, we took in Disneyland - lots of hiking there too! And then a couple days later we also did a fair amount of walking throughout Joshua Tree National Park. This week, we're resting up from our vacation!

New Name for Startup Weekend Seattle Project

We are no longer the knights who... oh wait... that's different. The new name for our project here at Startup Weekend Seattle is SkillBit. It had lots of support and we're hoping it will catch on!
